It’s time to wrap up the year. I don’t have a resolutions or goals post from last year to re-cap so that leaves this post fairly open ended. At some point a couple years ago I read an article about not publicizing your resolutions to help keep you on track. Now, though, since I don’t … Continue reading Wrapping Up 2010

Free Brains… I Mean Beta Exams
Part of being in the technology industry requires a constant dedication to learning. The world is a constantly changing place and the things you know today aren’t going to be cutting edge tomorrow. Those that stay in place and don’t change with the times can sometimes appear to be zombies. Just drooling along from one … Continue reading Free Brains… I Mean Beta Exams

My Three Events
A while back, I noticed that Paul Randal (on twitter as @paulrandal) had started a new blog meme on three events that brought their life to where it is today. I’ve skipped a lot the past year’s memes due to time constraints but thought I’d chime in on this one and have a go at … Continue reading My Three Events
BPA Installs But Doesn’t Work
I was hoping to have a case of the Mondays the other day. Whenever one hopes for “the Mondays”, Monday will always deliver. I was using a new PC at a client and installing some tools for an assessment that I was working on. After some download and installing, Best Practices Analyzer 2005 was installed … Continue reading BPA Installs But Doesn’t Work
SQL Load Generator
This project has been on CodePlex for a while, but I thought I would give it a plug. It’s a really good way to generate a load against a SQL Server without a lot of effort. I've used it quite a number of times with presentations and use it when testing different code choices to … Continue reading SQL Load Generator

Raw Data
Every now and then I need to put together demonstrations. I don’t usually like to “invent” data and like to look for sources of raw data on the internet. A friend forwarded me a link to http://www.google.org/flutrends. The site has a download for current and historical flu trends by state. Cool site and even cooler … Continue reading Raw Data
MSDN Post: OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN
A good performance tuning trick in SQL Server 2008 from the SQL Programmability team and a response reminding everyone that it isn't a silver bullet from Joe Sack. While cool, this item doesn't count towards my blogging goal for the year. Too bad, still a cool thing to play with.
Upgrade Issues When ‘sa’ Renamed
I've not done recommended changing the sa account name at a client for quite a while. Since the account can be disabled there isn't any good reason to rename it that I've been able to come up with. But if you do and plan to upgrade to SQL Server 2008, beware of the following... http://blogs.msdn.com/psssql/archive/2008/09/10/upgrade-for-sql-server-2008-can-fail-if-you-have-renamed-the-sa-account.aspx
