Pragmatic Works Webcasts This Week #passwit

WebcamEvery week, Pragmatic Works offers up its “Training on the Ts” webcast series and this month, in honor of Women’s History Month, the series is showcasing all of its sessions with women speakers.  Doing this offers all of us a chance highlight some of the female voices in our male dominated field.  Hopefully, this focus inspires some to take the chance to present at their user groups.  And, if not, provides everyone a chance to learn a few new things about SQL Server.

Contained Databases on Tuesday

This Tuesday, Sharon Dooley (LinkedIn) will be presenting “What on earth is a contained database?“.  In her session, she’ll be talking, as the title implies, about Contained database options in SQL Server 2012.  As she describes her session:

Anyone who has ever needed to move a database from one server to another has experienced the pain of dealing with mismatched SQL Server authentication logins. In this session, I will describe what a contained database is and how this new 2012 feature can ease your pain. I’ll look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of this feature and talk about the new SQL Users with Passwords and Windows users. I’ll demonstrate how to create a contained database and how to connect to it. Then I will demonstrate the process of making an existing database contained. If time permits, I’ll also talk about the way contained databases handle differences in collation between the contained database and tempdb.

The webcast begins at 11 AM EST on March 12 and you can register here to get the meeting details.

Filegroups on Wednesday

On Thursday, my friend and karaoke partner, Jes Borland (Blog | @grrl_geek) will be presenting “The What, Why, and How of Filegroups“.  Her session covers all things filegroups and provides some insight into a database option that’s older than she is.  The abstract for her session is:

Having multiple database files and filegroups is one of many strategies to improve performance and make administration easier. What are filegroups, and how do you use them? In this session, I’ll show you how to create filegroups, create objects in them or move objects to them, and discuss how they can help performance. I’ll also cover Enterprise-level features like piecemeal restores.

You can join her, and her coffee, at 11 AM EST on March 15 by registering here for the login details.
